It all started with Stong’s
Carson Ross Stong and his brother Joe founded Stong’s in the early 1890’s in Toronto. In 1931, Carson Stong moved to Vancouver and became very active in the grocery food scene, helping to set up two of the first open-air markets in the downtown core. They even used to deliver groceries long before online grocery shopping ever existed!
In 1955 Ralph Stong (Carson’s son) left the markets to open a grocery store on Dunbar in Vancouver. There has been a Stong’s Market on Dunbar Street for over 60 years strong and most recently opened a 2nd location in Northwoods, North Vancouver!
