Stong’s is a full service retail grocery store, established in 1910 in Toronto by the Stong Brothers, Carson and Joseph. We are 100% BC owned and operated.
At Stong’s Market, we offer a wide selection of products – far more than your average grocery store. We carry all major national brands as well as an extensive selection of unique, gourmet, natural and organic products. We pride ourselves on being local and in turn support local suppliers large and small. We have become the test market for many small suppliers looking to develop their product. In fact we were the first store to offer Lesley Stowe Raincoast Crisp crackers which are now sold throughout North America.
Our Meat, Deli, and Produce departments are second to none. Our fresh meat is cut and packaged in-store by apprenticed meat cutters not at a central plant. Our selection is outstanding, including exotic seafood, and gourmet items such as pheasant, quail, duckling and ostrich.
We believe our Edibles department to be the best out there. We carry a huge selection of home-made salads, entrees, roast meats along with the highest quality sliced meats, salami’s and sausages and local and imported cheeses.
Our Produce department offers nothing but the best in fresh fruits and vegetables including a great variety of organic, natural and ethnic choices. Whenever possible we support the local farmers buying direct.
Stong’s also offers Stong’s Express, an on-line shopping service. We offer next day delivery to most of the lower mainland with dedicated personal shoppers and trucks on the road seven days a week. Vancouver Since 1931
Carson Ross Stong and his brother Joe founded Stong’s in the early 1890’s in Toronto. They had up to four stores, one on Bloor Street and the other one at East Queens. At the turn of the century the brothers headed west ending up in Seattle, where they had up to 6 markets and were instrumental in setting up the now famous Pike Place Market.
In 1931, with the onset of the Depression, the two brothers closed up shop and parted company. Carson Stong ended up in Vancouver and became very active in the food scene here, helping to set up two of the first open-air markets in the downtown core. When Carson died in 1943, his son, Ralph Stong continued to grow the business.
In 1955 Ralph left the markets to open a store on Dunbar Street in Vancouver. During the 60’s and 70’s, Stong’s grew into a 5-store operation with locations throughout Vancouver and the North Shore. The North Shore locations included Dundarave, West Vancouver, Edgemont Village, North Vancouver, Deep Cove and Lynn Valley. Ralph’s son-in law Bill Rossum, took over as general manager in 1971.
Things thrived until the early 1990’s when the whole grocery industry out west changed, Bill and his daughter Cori Bonina, focused on the remaining Dunbar location turning it into a driving force in the Industry. Bill’s daughter, Cori Bonina, became General Manager in 1997 and then took over as President in 2001 with great success and notable achievement.
In 2016, Cori had to temporarily close the original Dunbar store due to the developing neighbourhood but opened a new location on the North Shore and later in 2016 the original Dunbar store was reopened only a couple blocks up from the previous location. Now it’s almost in the same location as the original Dunbar store was in 1955.
